The South Canterbury Car Club will again host a round of The Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship as the calendar for the 2021 season was announced on Tuesday 7th July 2020. The ever popular Stadium Finance Rally South Canterbury will return on Saturday 19th June 2021 to the panoramic, fast flowing roads of South Canterbury.
2019 NZRC Champion and South Canterbury Round winner Ben Hunt from Nelson who now resides in Auckland stated when asked about his return to Timaru that he was “gutted when Covid put paid to the 2020 event, as the south island reminds me of home” and said he was looking forward to “getting back down to South Canterbury where the cool, crisp mornings and unique public roads made for unbeatable rallying experiences.” With Tony Gosling from Stadium Finance very pleased to be continuing his support of the event , the Stadium Finance Rally of South Canterbury 2021 will be the third round of the 2021 calendar with Otago April 16th-18th and the International Rally of Whangarei May 14th -15th kicking off the return to championship rallying. The 2020 Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship has been cancelled with MotorSport New Zealand and the championship promoters opting to future-proof the sport in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first two rounds of the championship at Otago and Whangarei were already postponed because of the virus and the government-imposed isolation rules while the remaining events are unlikely to be sustainable.
Long lead-in times needed to organise events coupled with the need for the country to tighten its belts due to the economic impact of Covid-19 means entry numbers cannot be guaranteed.
After robust discussions the regrettable decision was made to indefinitely postpone the New Zealand Rally Championship so that the sport can reset and be in a better position to return to normal in 2021 rather than risk incurring a financial hit that could carry on into the future.
Championship title sponsor Brian Green Property has recommitted for the 2021 season in a major show of faith that the sport will be able to bounce back quickly from Covid-19. That support is a major step to ensure a competitive championship awaits next year.
